Our aim is to innovate X-ray imaging by developing distributed Flat Panel X-ray sources that offer low-cost and low-dose 3D imaging capabilities. We are replacing normal 2D X-ray with a low-dose 3D capability while making it more affordable and mobile.  This transformation will give more patients access to advanced X-ray imaging and has the potential to increase the accuracy of diagnosis of many high incidence conditions.  This can be done at the patient’s bedside or in a radiology department.

Adaptix builds on the benefits of the planar X-ray in three ways:

Adding point-of-care advanced imaging options 

Our multi-emitter array sequentially releases small X-ray cone beams from different positions. The acquired projection images are reconstructed into a 3D Digital Tomosynthesis volume in DICOM format, using Adaptix's proprietary algorithm. No mechanical movement of the source is needed - resulting in a shorter acquisition time and therefore reduced risk of motion artefacts.  Both, the Flat Panel source and reconstruction algorithm can be integrated into an existing manufacturer’s radiology product lines. As the source is compact and lightweight, it can be used in mobile or even portable solutions bringing advanced imaging to the patient wherever it is needed.

Reducing Source-Detector-Distance and input power

The geometry of the emitted beam allows Adaptix's Flat Panel X-ray source to be nearer the patient without incurring image magnification effects or the risk of higher skin exposure. In addition to reducing the device's footprint, this can in particular improve the image quality of bedside X-ray imaging, which is susceptible to substantial magnification of the heart shade.  The required input power is a few hundred times less than in a normal 2D X-ray system because a) the Source to Detector distance is considerably reduced and b) many ultra-low dose sequential emissions are made rather than a single high-dose emission.

A device deploying the distributed Adaptix Flat Panel Source can be compact and lightweight as the source itself is much smaller and lighter than a conventional X-ray tube. Since less input power is required, such a device can be operated from a standard power supply, eliminating the need for bulky batteries in mobile units and therefore dramatically improving portability and reducing costs.  By rastering across an array and not having to physically move the source in order to achieve a 3D dataset, the need for a computer controlled mover is eliminated, additionally reducing system size, complexity and cost.
